Questions, answered

Before you come

I've never tried SaunaGus before. Is that OK?

Yes. The gusmester explains everything before the first round, and you can step out whenever you like. Just stay out until the next round.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, and towels that cover your back, under your body and under your feet on the bench. One towel is rarely enough unless it's very big. A dry towel for after the sauna is nice to have, and so are sandals and a bathrobe. Bring a water bottle for the breaks, but leave bottles outside the sauna. You can borrow a sauna hat for free at both locations.

When should I arrive?

15 minutes before the session starts, so you have time to check in, change and shower.

What should I eat and drink beforehand?

Drink plenty of water during the day, so your body has time to hydrate. Have something light before the session, like a banana. Don't come on an empty stomach or straight after a big meal.

How long does a session take?

90 minutes: three rounds of SaunaGus, with breaks, rest and Cold Plunge in between.

What if it gets too hot?

Listen to your body. You can always move down a bench or step out. It also helps to cup your hands in front of your nose and breathe into them, rub your earlobes gently, breathe calmly or put on a sauna hat. In the break you can lie down in the lounge with your legs up and take a few deep breaths.

Do I have to do the Cold Plunge?

No. The cold is always your choice. A cool shower works too.

Why do people wear a hat in the sauna?

Your head heats up fast in the sauna. A sauna hat insulates it, so you don't overheat, and it keeps your hair from drying out in the heat.

What are the hygiene rules?

For hygiene reasons, everyone showers with soap before the session starts and rinses off under the shower between rounds. If you'd like to enjoy the cold in one of our chilled, filtered tubs, just remember to rinse off both before and after.

Can I come after a drink?

No. Don't come under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The heat puts a load on your body, and you need a clear head for it.

Can I come if I'm pregnant?

Talk to your own doctor first, and tell the gusmester when you arrive. Listen extra carefully to your own limits, and step out if you feel any discomfort.

What if I have allergies?

Tell the gusmester when you arrive if you have allergies that could affect the experience, for example to scents or herbs.

About SaunaGus

What's the difference between a sauna and SaunaGus?

In a regular sauna you usually sit in dry heat. At SaunaGus a gusmester pours water and essential oils on the stones, and the scented steam is fanned around the room while you're guided through the experience. The focus is on calm, rest and wellbeing.

Is SaunaGus good for you?

We'd call it a treat for body and mind. The heat gets your pulse and circulation going, and the breaks give you calm. If you're pregnant or have a health condition, talk to your own doctor first.

How often can I go?

It depends on how well you handle the heat, how well hydrated you are and your general health. Once or twice a week suits most people.

Why do I feel tired afterwards?

Your body uses a lot of energy regulating its temperature between heat and cold, and that's the tiredness you feel. You also sweat out minerals, so drink plenty of water before and after. If you go often, electrolytes or a little extra salt and magnesium can be a good idea.

Do you lose weight at SaunaGus?

You sweat a lot, so the scale may show less afterwards, but it's mostly fluid you'll drink back. Your pulse can rise, but not enough to lose weight. SaunaGus is for calm and wellbeing.

Is the sauna good for your skin?

The sauna can dry out your skin, so there are free body care products in the changing rooms at both locations. Rinse off with clean water afterwards, so sweat doesn't settle into your skin, and finish with an unscented moisturiser.
